Up next in our cinematic tour of “overdressed women exploring poorly lit places” is an earlier entry. Yes, it’s the early ‘70s, and that means big ole coyote fur coats and some more imported spooks from Europe. This week, it’s an English/Spanish co-production named The House That Vanished. Spoiler: the house does not vanish.
The House That Vanished – The Film
Valerie, a model, and her photographer boyfriend do a little “urban exploration” in an abandoned house in the middle of nowhere. This ends about as well as you imagine it would since it is a horror movie. Valerie escapes, pursued by the killer, and returns to London. She then tries to find her now missing boyfriend and the house he disappeared in. Will her new, shy artist friend Paul help out? Yes, because it turns out Paul is exceptionally familiar with the circumstances of her boyfriend’s disappearance.
The House That Vanished – The Furs
Let’s deal with the brief undercard before we get to the main event. First up is Stella (Annabella Wood), one of Varlerie’s London friends who helps her search. She appears briefly in this very short hair fur jacket.
Valerie’s (Andrea Allan) modeling career is explored briefly as she takes part in a photo shoot that features a feather wrap. I will, for no particular reason, point out she prominently puts on an opera glove in this sequence.
Okay, the reason we’re here. That would be the full-length coyote fur coat Valerie wears for many scenes. It first appears shortly after she returns to London, then pops up occasionally before the final act. Easily, the longest of these sequences is when Valerie explores a poorly lit basement while wearing the fur coat.
Fortunately, we are treated to the coyote coat in far better-lit scenes later in the film.
The film has a grand total of fifteen and a half minutes of fur (and feather) fashion, the vast majority of which is the coyote fur coat. While I’ve always felt coyote fur was the poor-costume-department’s-fox, it is enjoyable to watch on screen. Not to mention, leading lady Andrea Allan wears it well. The solid runtime brings the total to a very nice 15%, which is well worth the time investment.
